Looks like a Cormorant. A sea bird but you see them in lakes and rivers too. We have lots on our inland lakes here. Also known as Shags. Although in England we differentiate between the two. So I guess you are a twitcher now?
You're the one that knew what it was!!!! I think that makes you the twitcher ..... tee hee!!
Correction, I'm an amateur ornithologist not a bleedin' twitcher! Hope things are ok your neck o' the woods :)

actually, I think you'll find it's a kiwi-duck. very rare. ;o)
